Civil War cabinet card photograph of Henry S. Eggleston [picture] 1861.

Cabinet card photograph of Henry S. Eggleston, a major in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment who died during the Civil War and after whom Ripon, Wisconsin Civil War veterans named their Grand Army of the Republic Post. Eggleston was a prominent citizen of Ripon, Wisconsin before being commissioned a captain in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry. He was promoted to major in June 1862, but died of disease at a hospital in Milwaukee in December 1862. Following the war, Ripon area veterans honored him by naming their Grand Army of the Republic Post the Henry S. Eggleston Post No. 199. The image on the cabinet card appears to be a photograph of a charcoal drawing. It shows a bust view of a bearded Eggleston in Union uniform with major's shoulder insignia. The back of the card contains writing that identifies Eggleston, his unit, and his connection to the Ripon G.A.R. post, though it mistakenly lists the year of his death as 1863. The cabinet card was made by Evans of Ripon.
